The book was a text book at Indian Railways Staff College at Baroda by which several generations of officers were taught about the essential aspects of railway working. The book covers Railway Organisation, Advance Signalling Techniques, Permanent Way, Motive Power (Steam, Diesel & Electric), Yard Design & Shunting Methods, Line Capacity and Planning, Box Wagon Operation, Special Features in Foreign Railways and Management. It gave students at the time, 1960s to 1980 a very good foundation in Railway Operation. There have, of course been significant developments in rail technology since then.
