The book shows  much of the development of the British railway stations in its immense unique variety, and also tries to re-create some of the atmosphere and character of the station scene over nearly a century and a half of railways. The selection of photographs shows both the typical and unusual, in order to maintain a record as most of the stations illustrated in the book have suffered major alteration or in many cases, complete demolition.
