If there are two words that convey the spirit and feel of the Indian Railways, they are diversity and vastness. In spite of this, virtually all facets and aspects of this monolithic organisaitonhave been covered and presented in various books, volumes, publications, manuals, even in novels and short stories. After much contemplation and consideration, it was concluded that one dimension of the railways in our country that is not recognised, appreciated or understood is the tribe of rail enthusiasts. These men and women are not rail professionals but have made railways their hobby. They take pride in and enjoy what they do, leading to the information and knowledge that they have being phenomenal. This book took shape with the active participation of the rail enthusiast. Going through the book, a collection of articles and write-ups that sum up the Indian Railways, the contributors are not limited to enthusiasts alone; about half of them are railway men themselves. But even the latter have contributed not as railwaymen but as rail historians, connoisseurs or simply one who loves the railways.

The result is the book: Indian Railways - More Miles ... More Smiles. It does not cover the vast variety of functions of the Indian Railways, but strives to give you a feel of the spirit and mystique of the organisation in its many hues. In this process, it conveys the many miles in time and space that the Indian Railways has covered and the many more it is in the process of covering. While covering these miles the Indian Railways may have generated a few frowns, but the number os smiles its operations and different aspects have produced far outway the frowns. Of course, there are many more smiles yet to come and are on the way.
