The Report examines the evolution of rail based Urban Transportation systems in the country, Heritage Buildings, Tunneling and River Training and Bridge Protection Works from the persepective of recording the railways rich engineering heritage in these areas. In case of urban transport it examines urbanization and the development of rail transport in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad-Secunderabad including aspects on on construction, rolling stock, traction and signalling sytems. The Chapter on Heritage buildings covers the Western Railway Head Office Building, Southern Railway Head offices, Chennai & Egmore Stations, Howrah and Asansol stations on Eastern Railway, Lucknow and Delhi Jn. on Northern railway and a few others. The Chapter on Tunnels covers a range of tunnels, on hill railways, the Mangalore Hassan Line, Lumding Badarpur section, Konkan Railway, challenges on the line to the Kashmir valley and metro tunnels.
