The book traces the development of the Railways in India from its earliest years, through various phases of expansion of the network up to the mid nineteen eighties. It describes the role of private companies, state control, contribution of Princely States, creation of the Railway Board and seperation of Railway Finances from the National Budget.  Apart from a historical account, it describes the evolution of the management structure and the financial administration of the Indian Railways. The partition, post Independence challenges, re-organisation of railway systems and then contemporary  details of rolling stock and operations are also included. It was the first comprehensive history written in post Independece India.
