The book is a fascinating narrative with photographs, drawings, memoirs and techno-historical writings on the creation of this legendary railway workshop, founded in 1863. Published during its 150th birth year in 2013, the chequered history of this Eastern Railway's workshop, built by the erstwhile Eastern Bengal Railway (EBR) is displayed in the book. Originally meant for steam locos and railway rolling stock, the workshop has, over the years, specialised itself for electrical locomotives and multiple unit maintenance. Interestingly, the book also records that during the 2nd World War, the workshop had dedicated itself to the manufacturing of armaments, armoured cars and repairs to warplanes of the Allied forces.
